Khiva, perhaps, is a small city — its population barely reaches 40,000 people — but its history as the most preserved city on the ancient Silk Road, conveys its main attraction for tourists, restoring the historic trade route. It seems that no one knows for sure how old this ancient city is, although history says that Khiva was founded by none other than Shem, the son of Noah (who built the Ark)…
and at least the date of the foundation of the city dates back to the 7th century., and possibly much earlier. Khiva is a city of one-day excursion. Most of the city mosques, minarets and other historical buildings, known for their exquisite majolica and naturalistic painting, are in a historical place called Ichan-Kala.
